Tarsier — find reusable images of taxa
Discover openly-licensed images of any organism — by scientific or common name — across GBIF and the taxonomic literature (Plazi / BLR), confirm they’re genuinely reusable, and put them to use — including one-click upload to Wikimedia Commons.
Tarsier finds images of organisms that carry an open license (CC0, CC-BY, CC-BY-SA) you can reuse —
from GBIF occurrences and from the taxonomic literature
(Plazi figures via the Biodiversity Literature Repository on Zenodo).
It judges each image on its own license, flags whether a copy is already on
Wikimedia Commons, and where the license is compatible links straight to a
pre-filled Commons upload (a Wikimedia account is required).
Search by scientific name, or by a common name — common names are resolved to a taxon via Wikidata.
You can also deep-link a search with ?name= (e.g. ?name=Euphorbia neriifolia) or a Wikidata ?qid= (e.g. ?qid=Q2161999).
Issues and pull requests are welcome on GitHub.
